An APE (Monkey's audio) is a free lossless compression format for digital music. However, it is not supported on most portable media players. For that reason, many people prefer to convert their .ape files to .mp3 files. MP3 is a lossy compression file, which means it loses quality the more it is compressed.
To convert .ape files to .mp3 files under Ubuntu, you will have to have the ffmpeg utility. ffmpeg is used to record, convert and stream both audio and video.
