Fondant baby bootees make great decorations for a baby shower. These charming edible creations can be customised and are perfect cake toppers or platter decorations. Fondant is easy to work with, so anyone can follow the instructions and pattern to make a darling set of baby bootees to make a mom-to-be smile.
Print the pattern available in the Resources section. Cut out the pieces, as these will be what you use to cut your shapes. Printing them on cardstock is recommended as it is stronger and will last longer as a shape than ordinary paper. Make or buy your fondant. You can choose a coloured fondant or a neutral colour to paint later.
Roll out your fondant on a clean, flat surface. A rolling pin works best for this, but any smooth-edged rolling object, such as a can, will work. Roll out the fondant until it is the thickness of about two stacked quarters. Place the bootee pattern pieces numbered 1 and 2 on the fondant. Use a knife to carefully cut around the pattern pieces and into the fondant to create a replica just like a cookie cutter would.
Separate an egg and discard the yolk, leaving the egg white in a small bowl. Dip a clean craft paintbrush in the egg white. Brush the outer edge of bootee piece No. 1 with the egg white. Attach bootee piece No. 2 to the front of piece No. 1 so it forms a baby bootee.
Use your finger to smooth the edge where you attached the pieces. Dip a cotton ball in cornstarch. Place the cotton ball in the bootee to help it keep its shape. Use a pencil or other sharp object to poke holes and create designs on the bootee.
Cut the third bootee piece with the pattern on the fondant. Poke out the two lace holes. Brush the inside bottom of the third piece with the egg white. Attach this piece to the heel of the bootee. Press and hold in place. Smooth the edges with your fingers. Use egg white to attach the bootee heel and toe along the sides.
Allow the baby bootees to dry, then insert a ribbon through the lace holes and tie in a knot or bow to give the baby bootees a real-life look. Repeat these steps to make another bootee.
Make the bootees at least 24 hours ahead of time so the fondant can dry.
