How to dial an international number

Updated July 20, 2017

Dialling an international telephone number is different from dialling a long distance number within the United States. You will need a country code, city code and the local telephone number. Be aware that international calling rates are usually expensive.

Determine the country code and city code of the person you are trying to call. Contact your local operator by dialling "0" or look in the front of your telephone book for the specific listings for various countries.

Pick up the phone and listen for a dial tone. Dial 011 + Country Code + City Code + Number. Numbers often work without a city code by simply dialling 011 + Country Code + Local Number.

Wait for an answer. If your call does not go through, keep trying as international lines take longer to connect.

International calling rates are often expensive. Check with your local provider on rates or purchase a discount calling card.
