Ventolin is a type of medication used to treat asthma. The drug is a spray that acts on the air passages in the lungs, causing the smooth muscle to relax. The relaxation of the bronchial tubes increases their diameter and improves breathing capabilities. The medication is used in asthma maintenance and during bronchospasms caused by exercise.

Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Shake the inhaler and remove the mouthpiece cap.

  2. 2

Prime the inhaler before using. Pump it approximately four times. This removes any blockage in the inhaler's opening to ensure that you receive the right dose.

  3. 3

Place the inhaler opening in your mouth and squeeze the canister. As the medicine expels, breathe in, forcing the aerosol into your lungs. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds and breathe out slowly.

  4. 4

Wait one minute between doses. If you pump the inhaler more than once, wait a minute before repeating step 3.

  5. 5

Clean the mouthpiece, replace the mouthpiece cap and store the inhaler in a safe place. Your doctor may suggest keeping the inhaler with you at all times to relieve bronchospasms throughout the day.
