How to build a double bed

Updated April 08, 2017

Have you just found the perfect double mattress but don't have the money for an expensive frame? Most people do not want to set their mattresses on the floor of their bedroom, and building a base for your double-bed mattress is quick and simple to do.

Set out the frame. The standard double bed measures 54 inches by 80 inches. Take the 2x6 lumber pieces and lay them out into a rectangle.

Screw in hinges. Take the hinges and screw them into the outside corners of the bed with the wood screws.

Make the cross-frame. Take the extra 80" 2x6 board and put it in the centre of the bed to support the middle of the bed. Take the 2x5 flat wooden slats and cross them over the bed, perpendicular to the 50" pieces.

Secure the frame. Use either wood screws or carpenter nails to secure the cross-frame.

Sand. Use a fine grain sandpaper to make the wood of the bed smooth.

Stain. Stain the wood to make the bed go into any bedroom of your house.
