White spots on the skin may represent a fungal infection called tiena versicolor. This condition is fairly common and is caused by the fungus pityrosporum ovale (a type of yeast occurring on the skin). Certain conditions, such as extreme heat, can cause this condition to become a problem. Individuals who may experience the most difficulty with pigmentation tend to be African-Americans. Changes like hypo-pigmentation (loss of pigment) or hyperpigmentation (increased pigment) may be more common among this population.

Wash your face frequently using a moisturising soap, such as Ivory, Dove or another mild brand. Using a harsh soap will dry the skin.

  2. 2

Swab the skin twice daily with a solution of apple cider vinegar mixed with water. The acidic nature of vinegar may help hinder the growth of bacteria and fungus.

  3. 3

Apply an over-the-counter dandruff shampoo to a cotton ball and swab the skin. This method may be done as an alternative to the apple cider vinegar treatment.

  4. 4

Rule out a fungal infection. If no improvement is noted after a week of treatment with the shampoo and vinegar, you may rule out a fungal infection.

  5. 5

Exfoliate the skin. If the condition is not a fungal infection, try exfoliating the skin to remove dead skin cells that have accumulated. Use a commercial scrub that has exfoliating benefits.

Tips and warnings

  • If the above treatments do not provide relief, consult a doctor. Vitiglio and other conditions that do not respond to home remedies may be the cause.
