Creating a recipe template can be useful if you like to type up your own recipes but don't want to reformat the document every time. The template can store the font face, font size and even the position of the text on the screen, as well as any graphics or picture placeholders. A recipe template can also be used over and over again without fear of overwriting the template, because a template always opens as a new unsaved document.

Open Microsoft Word to a new blank document.
Click the "Insert tab" and select "Table" or click the "Table" menu and select "Insert," then "Table," depending on the version of Word you are using.
Designate the table to be 2 x 2, which means two rows by two columns.
Click in the top left cell and click the "Insert" tab or menu and select "Picture/Clipart" to add a picture placeholder to your recipe template. This will allow your recipes to have pictures included if you wish.
Click in the cell to the right of the picture and type the word "Ingredients."
Format that word using the font, size and colour options in the Font panel, formatting toolbar or the floating Formatting palette.
Type a carriage return and format this line with font, size and colour choice that would be applied to the list of ingredients. For example, you may want the word "Ingredients" to be bold, but the ingredients text to be plain.
Move your mouse to the second row and click at the start of the row when your pointer looks like an arrow. This will select the entire row (both cells).
Right-click the first cell of the second row and choose "Merge Cells" from the pop-up menu.
Type the word "Directions" into the second row.
Format this word like you did in Step 6 and add some carriage returns and format them like you did in Step 7.
Click the Office menu and select "Word Template" or click the File menu and select "Save As."
Choose "Word Template" (or "Document Template" in some versions) from the drop-down menu in the "Save As" dialogue box. It will show a file extension of DOT or DOTX, depending on your version of Word.
Type in a name for your template and check where it will be saved. In order for Word to use it as a template, it must be in a special templates folder. This is located in the user directory along a path similar to AppData\Roaming\Microsoft. Your path may vary slightly depending on your Microsoft Office installation.
Click the "Save" button and you have now created a recipe template.
Close the document window to test the template.
Click the Office menu or the File menu and click "New" or "Project Gallery."
Click the recipe template file icon and click "Open" to start a new recipe file using this template. When you save this new file, it will be a regular Word document with extension DOC or DOCX, not a template, and will not overwrite the DOT/DOTX file.
