Fire pits are popular for entertaining outdoors. Fire pits come in several designs--within tables, on legs, built out of rocks or straight in the ground. No matter the style, it is important to keep rain out of your fire pit when it's not in use. The best way to keep the weather out is with a waterproof fire pit cover. Inexpensive vinyl shower curtains make excellent covers for above-ground pits.

  1. 1

Measure the fire pit's diameter and height. Based on the measurement, determine how many shower curtains you will need.

  2. 2

Lay the shower curtains on the floor, side by side. Draw two circles on the shower curtains based on the height and circumference measurements. Base the inner circle on the fire pit's circumference, and the outer circle on the fire pit's height. Avoid the ends of the shower curtain, if possible.

  3. 3

Cut the curtains at least 2 inches beyond the outer circle. Sew the pieces of shower curtain together.

  4. 4

Turn the shower curtains right side out. Drape the cover over the fire pit to make sure it will fit. If the cover is too small, cut another panel out of a shower curtain and sew it on.

  5. 5

Turn the curtains back over. Fold the bottom edge up 1 1/2 inch all the way around and sew a hem. Leave a small space open so you can thread elastic through the hem.

  6. 6

Measure a piece of elastic that's 1/2 the circumference of the bottom hem. Attach a safety pin to each end of the elastic. Attach one safety pin to the plastic at the hem's opening to hold it in place. Insert the other end of the elastic/safety pin through the hem's opening. Push the safety pin through the hem, gathering the plastic behind the safety pin. The elastic is shorter than the hem so the plastic will gather and fit snugly around the fire pit.

  7. 7

Push the elastic/safety pin out through the opening. Sew the elastic together and sew the hem's opening closed. Place the cover over the fire pit.
