With summer approaching, a flat brimmed hat can be a great way to cover up your face and shoulders from the sun. Making hats, also known as millinery, is a fairly simple craft to take up, and making a flat brimmed hat is among the easiest hat-making projects.

Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Measure around your head, using the measuring tape, starting from the centre of your forehead about 1" above your eyebrows to the same point on the back of your head. This will be the circumference of your head. Take down the measurement, and choose a round hat body of that size. A hat body is a felt hood or hat form sold by millinery suppliers. It is the base hat form used for hat making. See Resources below for some hat supply dealers that sell hat bodies.

  2. 2

Cut the hat's crown, leaving about 1/4" above the brim--if the hat body is too tall or long for your head--to your desired length. Tuck the 1/4" portion under the crown, and pin it. Using a sewing machine, stitch the crown and the brim together to create a smaller crown.

  3. 3

Spray the hat form with water until it is moist all around and place it onto the hat block. Place your hat block on a flat surface, such as a sewing table or work table.

  4. 4

Fold your brim down onto the table. To avoid this step, you can buy a hat body with a brim instead of a hood.

  5. 5

Remove the hat from your hat block once it is dry, and wear it.
