A garden gnome costume is easy to make whether you are celebrating Halloween trick or treating or just attending a garden themed house party. Most of the costume is made from objects which you probably already have around the house, such as an oversized shirt, a belt and boots. It is comfortable to wear for hours and is easily adaptable for wearing by any age child or grown-up.

Infant Gnome

Dress the infant in a dark coloured onesie. Wrap a 3-inch wide piece of black material around the infant's waist as a belt, and cut out a gold buckle from construction paper. Glue the buckle onto the belt. Place red bootees on the infant's feet. Roll a 12-by-4-inch red felt rectangle into a cone, add an elastic chin strap and staple it together. Glue fake fur to the hat's bottom edge as eyebrows and at the front sides for a beard.

Toddler Boy Gnome

Clamp a pair of suspenders to dark coloured trousers. Put a plaid shirt on the little boy and then the trousers. Add a large, pointy red hat with cotton glued on it in the shape of eyebrows at the rim and a cotton beard around the front sides of the hat. Put red, pointy-toed slippers on the little boy's feet, and complete the gnome costume with a pair of sunglasses for a "cool" effect.

Toddler Girl Gnome

Dress the little girl in a bright plaid shirt and bright, striped tights. Add a little flowered skirt with suspenders. Cut out two 24-inch long triangles from red felt, and sew them together at the sides to make a hat. Leave the triangle bases unsewn for the head opening. Slide bright red plastic clogs onto the little girl's feet and a little bumbag around her waist so that the pack rests at her side.

Older Child Gnome

Have the child put on an oversized green shirt and a pair of dark fleece sweatpants. Put dark boots on the child's feet, and push the bottoms of the sweatpants into the boots. Wrap a dark leather belt with a large buckle around the child's waist. Add an oversized dark brown or green vest and a red Santa hat with the white ball cut off. Glue fake fur to the hat sides and rim for a beard and eyebrows.
