1
Wash the wheels with soap and water. Fill a bucket with warm water and detergent. Use a sponge to clean the wheels thoroughly. Allow the wheels to air dry.
-
2
Prepare the wheels for the paint. It is necessary to scuff up the surface with sandpaper, so that the primer and paint will adhere better. Use various grades of sandpaper, ranging from 220 grit to 320 grit. Wrap the sandpaper around a small tool such as a screwdriver to reach corners and edges that are difficult to reach by hand. Remove any noticeable traces of rust with steel wool. Dust the wheels after the sanding is completed. Wipe the wheels down with a cloth and lacquer thinner to remove oil, grease and fingerprints.
-
3
Coat the wheels with primer. Begin by applying a coat of self-etching primer. The self-etching primer prepares the surface and allows the primer and paint to adhere to the metal. Allow time to dry and then apply two coats of a regular paint primer. Allow drying time in-between the two coats. Self-etching primer and paint primer are available in spray can form.

4
Lightly sand the primer coat. Rub your hand over the surface and locate any bumpy areas. The wheel should feel smooth to the touch. Lightly sand bumpy areas. Wipe the wheels one more time with a clean cloth and lacquer thinner.
-
5
Paint the wheels with automotive spray paint. Hold the nozzle 8 to 10 inches from the surface. Apply the paint in small increments rather than all at once. Spray for a few seconds and then inspect the painted area. Examine for drips and runs and lightly touch up any you see with a clean clothe. Allow the first coat to thoroughly dry and then apply a second coat.
