A cowboy themed birthday party would not be complete without a cowboy hat cake which is quite easy to make. The hat's brim, a giant chocolate chip cookie, forms the base of the cake which is a simple two-layer round cake. Icing unites the image. Chocolate makes the villain's version while vanilla frosting makes a hero's hat. These instructions use bought cookie dough, a box cake mix and canned frosting. Of course, if you are a seasoned baker, you can whip up your own cowboy hat cake from scratch.

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 191 degrees Celsius while you cut a piece of parchment paper to fit on top of the round pizza stone or pan. This will limit the spread of the cookie dough while it cooks and create a round brim for your cowboy hat cake. Roll the cookie dough out on top of the parchment paper and cook for about 15-18 minutes or until the cookie is lightly browned on top. Remove the cookie from the oven and allow it to cool. The parchment paper makes it easy to get the cookie off of the pan when you are ready to build the cake.

  2. 2

Spray shortening on both of the round cake pans. Mix the cake according to the directions on the box. First combine the shortening and the sugar. Then beat in the eggs. Finally add the dry mix. Pour half of the batter into each pan. Bake. When the cake is done you will be able to insert a knife or toothpick into the centre and when you pull it straight out, it will be clean. If cake sticks to the toothpick, it needs to bake for a few more minutes. Let the cake sit in the pans for about 10 minutes after removing them from the oven. Then turn them out onto a cooling rack. Let the layers totally cool before proceeding to the next step.

  3. 3

Build the cowboy hat cake. Transfer the cookie to the foil covered cardboard by placing the cardboard on top of the cookie. Invert the cookie so that the cardboard goes to the bottom of the pile. Then carefully peel off the parchment paper. Spread a thin layer of frosting on the bottom of one layer of the cake. Place this layer, frosting down on top of the centre of the cookie. Spread more frosting on the top of this layer before placing the other layer on top.

  4. 4

Frost the cowboy hat cake with a generous amount of frosting. Finish the cake by pushing liquorice strings into the frosting where the brim meets the hat to make a black hat band that goes around the circumference of the hat. Top the hat with the proper number of birthday cake candles.
