Unpolished porcelain tile is one of the easiest types of flooring to clean. Daily sweeping, weekly mopping and stain removal are necessary, just like any other type of flooring. However, you must be careful choosing the types of cleaners that can be used. Follow these guidelines on caring for unpolished porcelain tile, and you'll be able to keep your floors looking like new for years to come.
Place area rugs at entry points into rooms with unpolished porcelain tile flooring. This will prevent dirt and grit from being tracked inside, and possibly ground into the tile.
Sweep or vacuum unpolished porcelain tile at least once per day to remove surface dirt and debris. This will also prevent dirt from being ground in, which makes it more difficult to remove.
Mop unpolished porcelain tile at least once per week with hot water and a specially formulated stone and tile cleaner. Read and follow the directions on the package for mixing. Apply the cleaner directly to the tile, and allow it to remain for five to 10 minutes.
Fill a plastic mop bucket with clean, cool water. Rinse the unpolished porcelain tile by applying the water with a mop. It may be necessary to rinse the floor twice to remove all the stone and tile cleaner. This can be done with a wet vacuum, instead of a mop, if necessary or desired.
Apply a stone and tile cleaning solution combined with hot water to any stains on unpolished porcelain tile. Scrub the area clean with a soft bristled scrub brush, or a mild abrasive scouring pad. Rinse with cool water once the stain is removed, and allow the tile to dry completely.
For a more natural approach, mop unpolished porcelain tile with a solution made of ¼ cup white vinegar to 2 gallons water. Rinse with clean, cool water and allow the tile to dry completely. This solution may also be used to remove localised stains on the tile.
Stone and tile cleaner can be purchased at local hardware stores, or home and garden shops.
Do not allow the stone and tile cleaner to dry on unpolished porcelain tile. If you have concerns, clean only a small portion of the floor at a time according to the instructions above. Do not use ammonia, bleach or acid-based cleaners on unpolished porcelain tile, as this can cause discolouration. In addition, do not use oil-based, wax or detergent cleaners. Do not use steel wool pads to clean unpolished porcelain tile, as this can cause rust stains.
