How to Make a Scarf With Pom Poms
Yarn (Stock.xchng)

Create these fun scarves easily by stringing together custom pom poms that you can make with the right tool and some yarn. Your scarf can be any size you like, made with one colour or in the hues of a rainbow. Creating your own pom poms gives you more creative options than if you purchased a bag of ready made poms. Select fuzzy yarn for a thicker look, or thin yarn to make pom poms that are more subdued. This scarf is four feet long and five inches wide, depending on how tightly you wrap your pom poms.

Instructions

  1. 1

Wrap the yarn around the pom maker about 50 times, gathering it in the centre and tying it securely, then cut the yarn where it is doubled to create fluffy pom poms. Repeat to make 72 pom poms. Making the poms is easy, but time consuming, so share the fun with your kids. This amount will make a scarf with three rows of 24 pom poms.

  2. 2

Thread your embroidery needle with thin yarn or embroidery thread and tie a thick knot at the end. Insert the needle through the centre of one pom, pulling the thread all the way through until the knot stops it.

  3. 3

Tie a knot in the thread close to the centre of the pom. This will keep the pom in place.

  4. 4

Tie a knot in the thread about ½ inch from the last knot. The pom will hide this knot, but it will help keep the second pom in place. Insert the needle through a second pom and pull the needle all the way through until it reaches the last knot you tied. Tie another knot to hold this pom in place.

  5. 5

Insert the needle through a third pom and pull the needle all the way through until it reaches the last knot you tied. Tie another knot to hold this pom in place. You've just completed one row.

  6. 6

Hold the needle and thread in one hand, letting the joined pom poms fall straight down. Grasp the pom closest to the needle with your other hand and insert the needle through its centre, 90 degrees from where the needle exits the pom. This will secure the side of your scarf and allow you to add the next row.

  7. 7

Repeat steps four, five and six until your scarf is as long as you like.
