How to make a car cake

Updated March 23, 2017

Cakes are very versatile desserts. A cake can be fashioned into nearly any object you desire. You can find round cakes, cakes shaped like flowers, cakes that look like top hats and even cakes that resemble cartoon characters. Some people spent money on bakery-decorated cakes while others prefer to make their own creative cakes. If you are one of the latter, a cake shaped into a car is an easy do-it-yourself project that will delight anyone who sees it.

Bake two standard sheet cakes in the cake flavour of your choice. You can bake the cake from scratch or use a cake mix.

Remove the sheet cakes from the pan and let them cool for at least an hour. Place them on a cold surface covered with aluminium foil.

Push three small wooden dowels in the middle of one of the cakes. The dowels should be evenly spaced. You can also use plastic straws. This will provide support for your top layer. The first cake will serve as the bottom of the car.

Cut the second sheet cake in half. Top the first cake with half the second cake. The second cake should be centred in the middle of the first cake. This is your car top.

Ice both cakes. You can use butter cream frosting or fondant. Butter cream is easier to work with if you don't work with cakes or frosting very often.

Place squares of chocolate on the sides of the second layer to serve as windows for the car. Place a large square on the front of the second layer to serve as the car's windshield. You can make wheels from cookies and car lights from Lifesavers or M&M's.

Turn the car into a taxi by using yellow frosting to cover it. Add details with chocolate icing.
