  1. 1

Combine the cake mix, egg, oil and water required by the instructions on the box.

  2. 2

Pour the cake batter into the baking pan and bake according to package directions, until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.

  3. 3

Let the cake cool completely, following the directions on the box. When it's cool, turn it out onto the serving platter.

  4. 4

Cut the cake into the shape of a basketball jersey by cutting a shallow U shape into the top narrow side of the cake. Be sure to leave 1½ inches on both sides of the U shape to resemble sleeves.

  5. 5

Look at the picture of your favourite team's jersey. Mix the food colouring into one can of the white cake icing until you achieve the colour of the shirt.

  6. 6

With the spatula, spread the coloured icing over the cake.

  7. 7

Stir food colouring into the second can of white icing until you reach the accent colours of the jersey.

  8. 8

Scoop the second batch of tinted icing into the pastry bag that has been fitted with a writing tip.

  9. 9

Using the pastry bag, pipe the icing onto the cake to match the accent lines in the picture of the basketball jersey. The cake is now ready to serve.
