How to Hook Up a Surround Sound System With PS3

If you want the full aural experience of your PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game system, you can connect a surround sound system to the gaming system. The process requires only a single cable and a few set-up selections on the PlayStation 3 menu.

Instructions

    Plug the digital optical cable into the "Digital Out" port on the back of the PS3. Connect the other end of the cable into the "Digital In" port on the surround sound system.

    Power on the surround sound system and the PS3. Set the surround sound receiver to "Digital In." It is now set to play the audio content from your PlayStation 3.

    Select the "Settings" option on the PS3 menu, then choose "Sound Settings," followed by "Audio Output Settings."

    Chose "Digital Out (Optical)" as your output setting and select your surround sound system, such as Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1.

    Click "OK" and the settings are saved on your PS3.
