- Skill level:
Things you need
- Cardboard box
- Craft knife
- Cutting board
- Craft glue
- Hot glue gun
- Old blue jeans
- 1/4 inch wide ribbon
Cut a piece of newspaper 15 inches square. Draw a heart shape on the newspaper. This works best if you fold the newspaper in half and draw half a heart on the folded edge. Cut through both layers and unfold your heart. This is your pattern for making a heart out of a cardboard box.
Cut open the cardboard box using the craft knife and lay flat on your work surface. Place the newspaper heart pattern on the cardboard. Avoid creased and folded areas on the cardboard. Trace around the pattern. Move the pattern to a new area of the cardboard and draw around the pattern again.
Place the cardboard on a cutting board and cut the hearts out using the craft knife. Apply craft glue to one side of one of the cardboard hearts. Stack the other heart on top of the glue and match the edges.
Cut the legs off the jeans. Open the seam on one side of each leg to create a large piece of fabric. Place the denim fabric wrong side up on your work surface. Place the glued cardboard hearts on the fabric. Draw around the stacked hearts one inch bigger all the way around. If the fabric is not big enough, overlap the other jean leg an inch and hot glue the overlap together. Cut the denim heart out.
Place the denim heart wrong side up on your work surface. Apply craft glue on one side of the stacked cardboard hearts. Place the stacked hearts glue side down and centred on the denim fabric. The back of the hearts is facing up. Fold the edge of the denim to the back of the cardboard heart. Make a slit the same length as the denim edge on the back of the heart. Repeat this with slits 1/2 inch apart all the way around the heart. Apply craft glue to the back of each slit. Fold the slits to the back of the heart. Adjust the slits as you go, to provide a smooth overlapping edge.
Cut around the back pockets on the jeans through both layers. Apply hot glue to the back edges of the pockets. Place the pockets on the front of the denim heart made from a cardboard box. This will serve as a decoration on the bulletin board and the pockets can also be a functional place to tuck a note.
Cut a 15-inch length of 1/4-inch wide ribbon. Turn the denim heart right side down. Glue each end of the ribbon centred 1-1/2 inches below each hump on the heart. Allow the glue to cool. This will be your hanger.
