Cut two pieces of fabric 2 feet by 3 feet, and two pieces of 2- by 2-foot fabric. Also cut two pieces that are 3 feet by 18 inches wide, as well as an 18-inch square. Fold this square corner to corner, and cut into two equal triangles with right angles. The fabric you choose can be traditional tent nylon, canvas or any other you like. A pretty cotton fabric is ideal for doll tents or shade tents for pets.
Thread the sewing machine with strong thread that matches the fabric. Putting the right sides of the fabric together, sew the two 18-inch pieces together along the long edge. Position the triangular pieces of fabric so the wide point is at the seam of the two long pieces you just sewn. Pin it in place if desired. Sew the triangle to both sides to create a long, triangular prism shape. This will form the pop-up tent roof.
Sew the 2-foot sides of the four large rectangular pieces of remaining fabric together with the good sides of the fabric facing each other. The result should be a rectangle of fabric. Measure to the middle of one of the longer sides and cut a straight line about 3/4 of the way up from the bottom to form a flap doorway.
Hem the doorway and all the way around the bottom of the fabric rectangle to make a neat edge. If desired, stitch ribbons into the edge of the doorway flap, one piece on each side, to use as ties to close the doll or pet pop-up tent. Pin the bottom rectangle of fabric to the tent roof fabric piece and sew securely together. Turn the entire fabric tent assembly right side out, clipping any internal corners if necessary.
Cut 15 pieces of plastic tube approximately 3 inches long. Cut five of them in half. Using a hot glue gun and glue sticks, attach a half piece of the plastic tubing to the middle of the remaining 10 pieces of tubing. They should form T-shaped assemblies of plastic tube. Set these aside to dry and cool.
Cut the wooden dowels (or rigid plastic or fibreglass rods) into the following lengths: five 3-foot lengths, four 2-foot lengths and four 18-inch lengths. The width of the rods must fit securely into the plastic tubing you use. These will form the framework of your pop-up tent for a pet or doll. Sand the ends if necessary.
Slide the appropriate dowels or rods into the ends of the plastic tube pieces to build the structure for the doll or pet tent. The flexible tubes will allow you to bend the frame into the correct shape. Put the fabric tent cover over the framework and pull it down tightly so the top and sides are smooth. Your doll or pet tent is now ready to use.
