The BMW E46, commonly known as the 3 series (323, 328 and 330 from 1999 to 2005), is typically not a car that you would want to perform maintenance on yourself. However, there are some minor repairs and modifications appropriate to even the most-hesitant novice. For instance, replacement of the black strip running across the front of your colour-coded bumper is a repair you can perform quickly and easily.

Things you need
- Putty Knife
- Replacement Bumper Trim
- Replacement Mounting Hardware
First, consult your local BMW dealership to purchase the appropriate parts. You will need the trim piece for the right and/or left side, as well as the mounting hardware. (These vary from model to model, and your dealer's parts department will be able to provide you with the correct hardware.)
Gently position your putty knife between the trim and the bumper, at the far right or left end. Gently (your bumper is a fairly soft plastic that will scratch easily) use the putty knife as a lever to pry the trim away from the bumper. Work your way down the length of the trim strip until you are able to remove it from the car.
Replace the mounting hardware on the back of the strip as appropriate.
Replace the bumper strip by working left to right, firmly snapping the mounting hardware into place.
Tips and warnings
- Take care that you do not scratch the soft plastic of the bumper.
