When it is time to work out, choosing from the options of available exercise machines can be a bit overwhelming. Different machines work the body in different ways. While cross-training with a variety of exercises is beneficial, some machines may appeal more to your personal preferences while helping you reach your specific fitness goals.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your personal fitness goals. Decide if you want to lose weight, increase cardiovascular endurance, maintain health, train for an event or a combination of these things.

  2. Step 2

Choose an elliptical machine or a spin bike if you want to burn a significant number of calories. You can increase your incline and/or your resistance to make the workout more difficult.

  3. Step 3

Use a treadmill for running or for walking. This machine can help you train for a distance running event and even allow you to simulate hills. You can use it for lower-intensity activity such as walking while also using the incline function to make the walk more difficult.

  4. Step 4

Ride a recumbent bike when you are looking for a lower-intensity activity or to focus on leg work. The seated position supports weight, making the activity easier, but you can turn it into an intense workout by increasing resistance and speed.

  5. Step 5

Use a rowing machine for a full body workout. The action of rowing works both the upper body and the lower body while keeping your heart rate elevated and causing the body to burn calories.

Tips & Warnings
  • If training for an event, such as a long distance race, stick to the treadmills and add in some elliptical work once or twice a week. If you want to lose weight as quickly as possible, choose intense workouts on the elliptical machine, spin bike workouts and running on the treadmill. For activities that are easier on the joints and lower intensity, choose walking on a treadmill or riding the recumbent bike.
  • If a machine doesn't feel smooth when operating, notify an employee at the gym. Some mechanical problems can result in injury.
