How to Spot a Fake Burberry Bag

Updated March 23, 2017

Burberry is a luxury retailer that produces women's and men's clothing and handbags. Due to the high-cost and status of Burberry bags, they are a prime target for counterfeiters. Not only do fake Burberry bags deprive the designers and manufacturers of their rightful compensation, but they can also be produced in sweatshops using underpaid or child labour. According to the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC), organised criminal groups frequently use the sale of fake luxury goods to raise money for their other illegal activities. By examining the details and craftsmanship of a potential Burberry bag, you should be able to spot a fake.

Consider the source. Authentic Burberry bags are sold in Burberry stores or high-end department stores, not on street corners. If you are unsure if a retailer is legitimate, contact Burberry at (800) 284-8480 and ask if the store or vendor is an authorised retailer of Burberry products.

Be sceptical of a great deal. The vast majority of Burberry bags are priced between £390 and £780. It may be possible to get a good deal on a Burberry bag during a sale, but you are not going to find an authentic Burberry bag for £16.

Check the spelling of the Burberry label on the front of the purse and on the interior. Frequently, manufacturers of fake and counterfeit purses will misspell the brand's name to skirt copyright laws. If Burberry is misspelled anywhere on the bag, that is a sure indication it is a fake.

Check to make sure the stripes or pattern match up on all sides of the bag. A stripe that extends to the side or bottom of the bag should line up across the seam. If the stripes do not match up along the side or bottom seams, that is usually an indication that the bag is fake.

Be wary of any Burberry bag that does not include a leather or metal plaque with the words "Burberry London" on the interior. A cheap cloth tag would be an indication that the bag may be a fake.

Check to make sure the metal on the interior tag matches any metal on the exterior of the bag. Burberry uses gold or silver metal accents on the exterior of some bags, and the metal surrounding the interior tag should match. A bag with silver exterior metal and a gold-plated interior tag would be an indication of a fake bag.

Examine the stitching on the interior and exterior of the bag. An authentic Burberry bag will not feature sloppy stitching or loose threads, while a fake bag might appear cheaply constructed with inconsistent stitching.

The only way to be sure you are buying an authentic Burberry bag is to buy it directly from Burberry or another authorised retailer.
