Custom sneakers add a personalised touch to the jeans-and-T-shirt look -- or any fashion ensemble, for that matter. Converse All Star sneakers are no exception to the rule. So, you're pining for a pair no one else has with style and colours that are in tune with you and your wardrobe. Make them yours. You can design a custom pair online or at home, depending on how stylised or inexpensive you want your creation to be.

Instructions

  1. 1

Choose from the many styles and customisation sites. Converse.com hosts an easy-to-use interface for making your own All Stars. You also can select colours, fabrics (leather, suede, canvas, or satin), as well as hi-top, low-top and slip-on varieties. As of April 2011, prices range from £43 to £52 for adult sizes, and £29 for kids' custom shoes.

  2. 2

Select colours that complement your wardrobe. Keep in mind that changing the laces is easy, and you may opt to design shoes that will work with a few different lace colours. Choose your fabric; remember that not every colour is available for every fabric. Leather is easiest to keep clean, while suede will require additional care to stay looking out-the-box new. Canvas All Stars can be cleaned with your regular laundry> So pick a fabric you pick that fits in with your lifestyle and normal shoe-maintenance routine.

  3. 3

Confirm your design and place your order. As of spring 2011, delivery times are running three to four weeks, so if you are designing shoes for a special event plan ahead so that your custom kicks arrive on time.

  4. 4

Hand-paint your own pair of Chuck Taylors. This option is best for canvas shoes. Find waterproof paints at your local crafts store. Buy plain canvas All Stars. Sketch out your design. Apply your design with a brush or sponges. Allow shoes to dry for four to five hours, then apply a coat of waterproof sealant.

Tips and warnings

  • Take good care of your custom All Stars, and enjoy wearing them with outfits that make them stand out.
  • Hand-painted canvas All Stars will fade with regular wear. Consider wearing hand-painted shoes only on days with clear weather forecasts.
