How to Make Baby Dragon Cakes

A decorative cake can bring excitement to a child's party. Creating a character with cake and icing can be time consuming, but worth the effort. Read on to learn how to make a cute, edible baby dragon. Note that this article describes how to make a baby dragon cake with pre-made materials (purchased cake batter and fondant).

  • One large baking bowl
  • One small baking bowl
  • One round baking pan
  • Four boxes of cake mix and the ingredients the mix calls for (may vary by mix)
  • Cake decorating tools
  • Large cutting board or cake pan

    Bake the cake shapes. Prepare the cake batter in a large bowl according to the directions on the box. Generously spray the baking bowls and cake pan with a non-stick cooking spray. Divide the batter between the large baking bowl, the small baking bowl and the cake pan. Then bake the batter in the oven. Like the pieces of a puzzle, these are the sections from which you will assemble your baby dragon. Note that the batter in the cake pan may be ready much faster than the batter in the bowls. While the pieces may cook at the same temperature, you will need to take care that you do not over cook the batter in the pan. You can determine that a section is ready when a fork, toothpick or chopstick (for the deeper bowls) inserted into the middle of the batter comes up clean.

    Place the head and body. Once all the batter has been baked, it is time to assemble the dragon. Remove the baked sections of batter. The large bowl makes the shape for the dragon's body. The small bowl makes the shape for the dragon's head and the cake pan makes extra material for the neck and tail. Place the body first. Set the cake from the large bowl upside down on a cutting board or pan so that it makes a dome. Once you being to assemble the pieces, you will not be able to move the dragon, so make sure you set it down on what you want to use to display it. Set the cake from the small bowl a distance away from the body. You can make it a few or several inches, depending on how long you want the neck to be.

    Next, make the neck and tail. Take the cake out of the cake pan. Cut two slices about two inches thick along the curve of the cake. These slices will be the neck and tail. Lay one slice between the body and head. Lay the other at the back end of the boy. You may choose to cut the open end of the this slice into a point shape.

    Paint the dragon. Use the icing to paint the entire body, head, neck and tail. Make sure to use the icing to cover the places where the pieces intersect. This will smooth out the joint areas and make the four pieces look like one complete creature.

    Add the final touches. By cutting the fondant into shapes, you can make scales, wings, a tongue or any other additions to your creature. Use the cake decorating tools to add eyes, ears or anything else your imagination can think of. Now your dragon is ready to display and enjoy.
