Pirate ships are the stuff of legend and fantasy, but you can build one for any party. Your pirate ship will include much of what a normal pirate ship has, such as a mast, canons, sails and a skull-and-crossbones flag. This article provides step-by-step information about how to construct a small pirate ship for entertainment purposes.

Instructions

  1. 1

Purchase a large, long cardboard box for the body of your pirate ship. Draw the outline of a ship on the side of the box. For accuracy's sake, get a drawing or picture of a pirate ship to use as a guide. Copy the same drawing onto the other side of the box. Draw the edge of the ship so that it runs from the top of the box to the bottom edge. One edge of the box will be the top of the ship where the deck and masts will be, and the other edge will be the bottom of the boat.

  2. 2

Cut out the portion of the box that is drawn in the shape of the pirate ship. This will cut off two ends of the box, which can be left open if you only want the ship to be seen in profile. If you want the ship completely enclosed, use the leftover cardboard to cover up the open spaces. Use Elmers or other forms of glue to attach the pieces of cardboard to each other. Draw any designs or decorations on the sides of the ship and punch several holes along a single line. These holes will be where the cannons emerge from the ship's sides. Make sure that the holes are large enough for a small 3/4-inch PVC pipe.

  3. 3

Cut three pieces of PVC or wooden dowels at different lengths. One of the pieces should be larger than the others because it will function as a mast, adding a bit more realism. Cut holes in the top of the deck through which to insert the masts. Place one pipe toward either end of the ship and the main mast directly in the centre. If the pipes do not stand up on their own, anchor them using a dirt-filled flower pot or glue the masts to the bottom of the box. Use PVC connectors to create the horizontal beams from which the sales will hang on the masts.

  4. 4

Roll up the cloth and attach it to the cross beams on the mast. Connect the masts with string and connect the masts to the rest of the ship with the string. Build a wheel for the ship out of cardboard and attach it to the deck. Cut short lengths of PVC pipe and paint them black. Insert these into the holes in the side of the ship--these are your canons. Paint one of the pieces of cloth black and paint on a skull and crossbones or purchase a flag and attach it to your pirate ship.

  5. 5

Paint the ship with dark, threatening colours. If you want the ship to look authentic, paint the side brown with lines to represent the planks. Paint the deck and the top edge of the ship black and the masts brown. As a finishing touch, cut out a cardboard plank and attach it to the side of the ship.
