How to Make Edible Volcanoes

Updated April 17, 2017

You will be able to make a fun science treat for children of all ages. This is a great treat to use in a classroom at the conclusion of a unit on volcanoes or at home with your own children.

Access prior knowledge by using a graphic organizer. Hopefully, the group will have had chances to read about, perform experiments, or research volcanoes before making the treats.

Give each child a bowl, a napkin, and a spoon. Explain that they will be making edible volcanoes. For younger children, explain what edible means.

Open the box and give each child an ice cream cone. Tell them to bite the end off and eat it, then set the cones flat side down in the bowls so that it looks like a volcano.

Next, have the children take turns pouring strawberry topping into the opening. Explain that the topping looks like lava as it runs down the sides of the volcano.

The topping will puddle at the base of the "volcano". Have a camcorder or camera ready because the excitement of eating these volcanoes is amazing.

Reading a simple book on volcanoes before making the ice cream volcanoes is a wonderful way to introduce children to fun science.
