Umbrellas can be used in many different ways during a wedding. They can be carried by the flower girl or bridesmaids. They can be turned upside down and filled with gifts. Large, table-sized umbrellas are often used at outdoor receptions, such as those that come with outdoor patio sets. The ideas below can be used to decorate any kind of umbrella at a wedding.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- Hot glue gun and hot glue
- Floral wire
- Flowers, real or fake
- String of white lights for table umbrellas
- Other decorative accessories of your choice
Determine the use of the umbrella. If it is going to be turned upside-down to hold gifts, you are going to want to add the decorations accordingly. If it is going to be used outside, you are going to want to add decorations that can stand the outdoor elements, including wind, rain or heat. If it is going to be carried by the flower girl, you will want to make sure the decorations do not add too much weight to the umbrella.
Decorate the edges. Using a hot glue gun, carefully attach a decorative edge to the umbrella (as it is open). This could be a string of beads, a length of lace, a fake flower vine, a ribbon, or even fabric. When attaching fabric, instead of following the edge of the umbrella, consider attaching it at the corners and letting it droop down in swags from corner to corner.
Decorate the tip. Again with the umbrella open, place a large bow or bouquet of flowers at the tip of it. You will need to use a lot of hot glue, or alternately, wire it to the umbrella with floral wire.
Decorate the handle. Consider twining a length of ribbon up the handle, with a flower anchoring it at the base. Be sure not to put too much stuff at the base of the handle if someone is actually going to be holding the umbrella.
Decorate the umbrella panels. For fun, you could ask guests to add their handwritten good wishes in a permanent marker on the fabric panels of the umbrella. Alternately, use the hot glue gun to attach photos of the bride and groom to each panel.
