The folding paper fan is the most graceful and attractive hand held fan. It is also much more portable than a paddle fan as it can be collapsed into a short, thin stick. For a quick, easy-to-make fan on a summer day, fold one out of paper. For a more durable and attractive version, reinforce it with wood.

- Wood sticks
Make accordion folds in a rectangular piece of paper, starting from one end to the other. Make the sections as thick or thin as you want. Just make sure they are all the same size.
Cut two pieces of wood so that they are slightly larger than one of the sections in the accordion folds. Drill a small hole in the bottom and the top of each one.
Glue a piece of wood to each end of the folded paper. Make sure that the holes at the top and bottom are out past the edge of the paper.
Tie the two holes at the bottom together with a string. you can now open and close the fan by fanning the pieces of wood out and pulling them back together
Tie a string through one of the holes at the top. When you want to close the fan, simply tie it through the other hole with a slipknot
