How to Make a Furniture Dolly

Updated April 17, 2017

If you need to move or just need to move heavy items, nothing can make the job easier than using a furniture dolly. While a fairly simple device, a furniture dolly is often fairly expensive to buy or rent. For a little more than the price of a day rental, you can build your own furniture dolly in a little under an hour, with materials that are readily available.

Cut 4 lengths of 2 by 4s. The two pieces making up the front and back should be 18 inches and the other two pieces should be 30 inches.

Wrap the two 18-inch pieces with carpet, stapling it to the wood. This will add padding and protect furniture.

Nail the furniture dolly together. Nail the front and back pieces on top of the side pieces making a rectangular frame. Make sure the frame is sturdy.

Flip the furniture dolly over. Attach the casters to the corners using screws and a power drill.
