Capital One was created as a company in 1995. They have banking operations in both the United States and the UK. Since 1995 they have become one of the most popular credit cards due to their numerous commercial advertisements. Many people have a Capital One credit card. However, Capital One has one of the most difficult cards to cancel. At times, they ignore cancellation requests.

  1. 1

Pay off any account balances. Capital One is one of the hardest companies to cancel with if you have not paid off your balance. If you do not have enough money to pay off your card at one time, pay it off a little at a time before you cancel the credit card.

  2. 2

Call the number listed on your Capital One account that will handle the card cancellation. Capital One's customer service number is: 1-800-955-7070. You will have to wait for several minutes before a representative will be able to talk to you. You may have to pay a £6 fee before you can talk to a real person. This is something that only Capital One does. When you reach a real person, let them know you want to cancel the account. They will try to get you to keep it open. However, be firm. Ask them if there is anything that you have to do to close the account. They will let you know if there is any balance remaining on the card.

  3. 3

Write a letter addressed to Capital One at: Capital One Attn: General Correspondence, PO Box 30285, Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0289. State that you are closing your account and are no longer authorising charges made to that card. Sometimes they will try to charge items after the account has been closed. You must make sure there is no balance on the card or else you will be charged late fees. You will want to be sure that the main office is where you send the letter to close your account.

  4. 4

Wait a week while your letter is arriving via mail. Call Capital One to make sure they received your letter stating that you were closing the account. They should have your closure request and your confirmation letter. If not, ask them to close it again.

  5. 5

Check to see if Capital One applied any closing fees to your account. You can do this by calling or checking your online statement if you receive one. If they have applied unauthorised charges, call Capital One and dispute them.

  6. 6

Call Capital One again at 1-800-216-1686 to confirm that your account is closed. You should no longer have an account with them or any outstanding balances.

Tips and warnings

  • Always check your statement balance to make sure all charges listed were authorised by you.
  • Never yell at a phone representative. It will only make it harder for you to get your card cancelled.
