How to build a telescoping flag pole

Adding length to a flagpole and designing it to telescope up and down will provide more location flexibility when hanging a flag. You don't need to go out and buy a new pole; you can make a telescoping flagpole with the one you already have.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Flag on a pole
  • Plastic pipe
  • Power drill
  • Ringed pin

  1. 1

Choose a piece of plastic pipe that is big enough to allow the existing flag pole to fit in. It should be snug, not too tight. The pipe's length should be approximately equal to the length of the existing flag pole.

  2. 2

Drill a hole through the plastic pipe, about two inches from one end. Drill all the way through, making two holes. The size of the hole should be large enough to allow the ringed pin to slip through, yet be snug. The flag pole should not be inserted in the pipe when you drill these two holes.

  3. 3

Place the flagpole into the end of the pipe where the holes have been drilled.

  4. 4

Move the flagpole up and down in the pipe, finding a desired height.

  5. 5

Drill a hole through the flagpole, by holding the pole securely in the pipe and using the drilled pipe holes as a template.

  6. 6

Adjust the pole up or down in the pipe, to another desired total pole length. Repeat Step 5.

  7. 7

Position the flagpole at a desired height, matching the holes that have been drilled. Insert the pin to hold the flagpole in place. The pin's length should exceed the diameter of the pipe.

Tips and warnings

  • To make it easier to locate the holes, draw a line on the flag pole, tracing along the edge of the pipe, when the holes of the pole and pipe are aligned.
  • Do not drill holes at an angle. Each pipe hole should be the same distance from the end of the pipe.
