How to Convert From Inches to Centimeters

Updated April 17, 2017

The centimetre is a unit of measure in the metric system. The U.S. equivalent is 0.39 inches. You may know that a centimetre is one-hundredth of a meter, but do you know the easiest way to convert a number from centimetres to inches? This might come in handy if you know a newborn is 60cm long and you want to figure out how many inches that is.

Take the number in centimetres and multiply it by .39. (For example, a 60cm long baby x .39 = about 23 inches long).

Find the number in centimetres when you know the number of inches by multiplying that by 2.54. (For example, a 24 inch baby x 2.54 = about 61 centimetres)

Know that the conversion rate is 2.54cm to 1 inch. With this rule, 5.08cm are equal to 2 inches, 7.62cm equal 3 inches. This can be a quick and efficient way to measure common distances.
