Watch for an improvement in your condition. Watch for relief from pain and/or inflammation. This is an indication that the medication is working and is not causing a negative reaction to your system.

  2. 2

Notice mild side effects which include nausea, heartburn, headache and dizziness among others. Understand that these are not important unless they intensify or persist, in which case a doctor should be called.

  3. 3

Be on the lookout for serious side effects which include difficulty swallowing, serious stomach pain, appendage swelling, pounding or rapid heartbeat and vision or hearing changes. Call the doctor immediately upon developing any of these symptoms as they are adverse side effects.

  4. 4

Take note of symptoms that would point to the side effect of liver damage. They would be considered grave side effects. These symptoms might include yellowing of the eyes, dark skin, tiredness, dark urine or persistent extreme stomach pain. Stop the medication and call the doctor.

  5. 5

Watch for the development of breathing difficulty. Watch for hives. Watch for swelling of the lips or throat. Note that this is an anaphylactic reaction and can be fatal. It develops rapidly so an ambulance must be called quickly.

Tips and warnings

  • Keep a log with respect to symptoms so you do not have to rely on your memory.
  • Place the prescription information and notes in a place where they are visible and where they are easily retrievable. Share the fact that you are on new medication with someone who either lives with you or sees you very often and give them access to the information.
  • Watch for any side effect no matter how mild that does not go away as it may develop into a greater problem. Always call the doctor immediately if you develop a problem.
  • Never drive yourself to the hospital if you are having problems breathing.
