How to Make a Tiered Spice Rack

Make better use of cupboard space by making a tiered spice rack to put inside a spice cupboard. This will make it much easier to find all the different spice jars and containers in the cupboard instead of having to lift every jar or container up to see the label and tell if it is the one needed for the cooking project at hand. This way the spices can be organised and alphabetised, plus be seen on the different levels and found more easily. This is simple wood working project that takes very basic wood making skills to make. There is no need to be a master wood craftsman to make one.

Instructions

  1. 1

Measure the cupboard the tiered spice rack will sit in. Then decide how much space is needed for spices. If it is the whole width of the cupboard make the three pieces of wood short enough to add the two end pieces to and fit easily in the cupboard. Cut three equal length pieces of the 4 wood with the cross cut saw or table saw.

  2. 2

Cut two pieces of plywood in a stair step pattern.(See photo) These are the ends the three cut pieces will be nailed to make a tiered spice rack. This is like building a small set of stairs on which to set spice containers.

Put the longer widths of the 1 7/8 inch wood as the front of the pieces and the shorter width sides 1 3/8 inch, as the tops of each tier or step. Hammer one end piece onto the ends of the three cut wood shelves. Each tier or step should be flush with three side pieces so it is one continual stair on each of the three levels. Hammer the other end in place. Make sure all the nails are driven in flush with the wood.

Use the sanding paper and sand off any rough edges or areas on the spice rack. Brush off the sawdust and wipe the tiered spice rack clean. Now put it in your spice cupboard and organise spices facing so the names can be read in alphabetical order. It will be much easier to use and keep spices organised this way. This spice rack accommodates different sizes and shapes of spice containers so you aren’t limited to buying only one brand or having to have a certain shape of container to fit in the spice rack.
