Cleaning brass and copper items can be a chore. Harsh chemical cleaners can damage brass and copper, as well as sensitive skin. A safe, natural cleaner is easy and inexpensive to make at home and this homemade paste quickly restores the metal's lustre.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • 2 to 3 tbsp table salt
  • 1 to 2 tbsp flour
  • White vinegar
  • Soft cloth
  • Towel

  1. 1

Mix the salt and flour in a bowl. Add the white vinegar a bit at a time until a paste forms.

  2. 2

Dust off the object to be cleaned. Dip a soft, dry cloth into the paste and rub it onto the metal. Clean the whole object, focusing on dark or tarnished areas.

  3. 3

Hold the brass or copper object underneath warm, running water to rinse the paste from the object. Do not use soap on the metal.

  4. 4

Dry the object with a soft, dry towel and store or display as usual.
