How to Replace the Valve Cover Gasket in a Hyundai Santa Fe

If you own a 2001 through 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe more than likely you have driven or are approaching 100,000 miles. This is the perfect time to change the valve cover gasket. Performing this maintenance will possibly prevent an oil leak and a smoking engine.

Things you need

  • Valve cover gasket
  • Torque wrench
  • Spark plug tool
  • Spark plugs

    Allow the engine to cool. Lift the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air duct and the engine cover. Disconnect the AFS connector.

    Remove the breather hose and the PCV (Positive Crankcase ventilation) hose. Disconnect the breather hose from air cleaner hose. Remove the air cleaner assembly and the intake air hose, the spark plug wires and the valve cover. Using the spark plug tool remove the spark plugs. Remove the old valve cover gasket and using automotive engine cleaner and a clean cloth rag, clean the valve cover seating area.

    Place the new valve cover gasket into the gasket seating area. Apply liquid gasket to the head cover gasket at the corners of the recess. Install the valve cover and using a torque wrench tighten the bolts in sequence.

    Using the spark plug tool, put the new spark plugs in. Reconnect the spark plug wires and the breather hose from air cleaner hose. Reconnect the PCV (Positive Crankcase ventilation) hose and breather hose. Reconnect the AFS connector. Reinstall the intake air hose and air cleaner assembly and the engine cover. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal. Reinstall the air duct.
