Spice Girls costume ideas

Updated July 19, 2017

The Spice Girls became popular in the 1990s with hit songs like "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life." The five Brits each had individual personality traits and styles that set them apart from one another. So if you're stumped about what you and your group should wear to a costume party, dress as the Spice Girls; people will definitely notice you in your crazy getups, and you can enjoy the night by imitating the larger-than-life characters.

Baby Spice

Called Baby Spice, Emma Bunton had a distinct style that made her seem innocent and sweet. She usually wore bright-coloured silk dresses in pink or baby blue. To emulate this Spice Girl, you can wrap your hair (or a blonde wig) in buns at the top of either side of your head, with long fringe at your forehead. Complete the look with accessories; find some complementary platform pumps and carry around a bright-coloured lollipop or a small teddy bear.

Posh Spice

Posh Spice, aka Victoria Beckham, got her name from wearing classy (though revealing) outfits that gave her a "rich" look. You may need to find a chin-length, straight-styled black wig to mimic Posh's hairdo. A tight, short black dress, preferably in leather or pleather, or even a black and shiny catsuit will give you that Posh look. Some black high heels will bring the look together.

Scary Spice

Melanie Brown, also known as Scary Spice, got her nickname because of her outrageous hairstyle and flamboyant costumes. She typically wore tight cheetah-print outfits, sometimes a short dress and at other times a cheetah-print bustier with a matching tight pant. To copy her hairstyle, find a curly, voluminous brown wig and use a lot of hairspray to keep it in place. You will want to add to the look some matching platform shoes, perhaps in black.

Ginger Spice

The most outspoken of the group, Geri Halliwell, or Ginger Spice, wore very revealing clothes that showed off her curves. Her trademark was a tight dress decorated with the British flag. If you cannot find a dress like that, look for a short, white dress and paint the British flag on it using fabric paints. You will also need a red wig if you do not already have red hair. You can add to the wig some blonde streaks near the forehead. Finish the look with some red platform boots.

Sporty Spice

Sporty Spice got her name from her athletic physique and the seemingly constant high-kicking she did in the Girls' music videos. Melanie Chisholm usually wore sporty looks that combined a revealing bare-midriff, spaghetti-strapped shirt with a matching pair of workout trousers. She wore her shoulder-length brown hair straight most of the time and complemented her athletic look with a pair of colourful sneakers. You can carry around a soccer ball when you go out to really complete the look.
