Items mailed at a United States Post Office have the option to be sent with Delivery Confirmation. The additional service allows the sender and receiver to check the status of the mailed item and learn the date, time and location of the mailed item during its travels through the postal system. Checking on the status of your mailed item sent with Delivery Confirmation is simple. You can check on your mail by phone or the Internet when you need to know the exact date, time or location for a mailed item.

    Save your delivery confirmation claim ticket after your visit to the post office.

    Dial the toll-free telephone number on your delivery confirmation claim ticket (1-800-222-1811). Listen to the menu of options presented by the voice recording. Verbally speak "Track and confirm" and then, when prompted, your 20-digit delivery confirmation number to check the status of delivery confirmation mail. A recording will recite your number back to you for accuracy. Confirm the number is correct by saying “Yes.”

    Wait for the automated system to locate your delivery confirmation number and listen to the status of your mailed item. Next, you will be given an option to check on the status of another package, or simply hang up and end your call.

    Check on your delivery confirmation mail by using the Internet. Open a web browser, and go to the website of the United States Postal Service (see Resources). Locate the box labelled Track and Confirm, on the right side of the screen.

    Type in the 16-digit code on your delivery confirmation claim ticket, and press enter. Read the status of your mailed item. A variety of statuses are available, including: Acceptance by the originating post office, Arrival at the post office in the destination city, Delivery of the item and On Hold Status.

    Repeat the check on your delivery confirmation mail until the item has been reportedly delivered to its destination. You may also sign up for e-mail updates on the status of your mailed item on the postal service website, just under the current status of your mailed item. Add multiple e-mail addresses to the update option to allow the sender and receiver to be notified when the item is delivered.

    Check your e-mail daily to learn the status of your delivery confirmation mail. Information is updated each evening after 5:00 pm.
