Controlling your dreams is something anyone can do. It just takes practice. If you don’t like the way a dream is going you can change it. You can also control your dreams before you fall asleep. Stop the bogey man from harassing you in your sleep. Nightmares won’t bother you anymore once you learn how to control your dreams.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set the proper environment. If you read a scary book or watch a scary movie before bed, you will be more likely to have a bad dream. The time before bed should be filled with calming, peaceful thoughts so your dreams will be good. Try not to fall asleep with the TV or radio on as these can disrupt to your dreams.

  2. Step 2

Imagine what you want to dream about before going to bed. Close your eyes and visualize what you want to happen in your dream. Focus on it for at least 10 minutes. Say it aloud to really strengthen the thought in your mind.

  3. Step 3

Go to sleep. If your dream is not going the way you want tell yourself to stop. Remember what you originally wanted to dream about and see that happening. Talk to yourself in your dream.

  4. Step 4

Stop your bad dreams or nightmares from going any further. If you see a monster in your dream, turn to it and tell it to go away. Stick your tongue out at it. Do something silly to break the hold the fear has on you. Then you can guide the dream to where you want it to go.

  5. Step 5

If you are where you wanted to be in your dream but the nightmare tries to follow, invite the monster to join you. Have the monster serving ice cream or some other harmless task. It sounds silly, but that will allow you to enjoy your dream without struggling to fight the nightmare for control.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is important to practice this during good dreams so you won't be as scared as during nightmares.
  • This is a wonderful thing to teach a child. Pick a place that is fun and tell your child before bed time to meet you there. When you wake up in the morning discuss what you did in your dream together. This will increase your child’s control over their dreams.
  • If you wake up from a bad dream, sit up and do not try to go back to sleep until it has cleared your mind. Go back to Step 2 and try focusing on what you want your dream to be once again.
