How to become a tax return preparer

Updated February 21, 2017

To become a tax preparer, you must complete a course that teaches the right way to prepare taxes. The course will teach you about the different type of tax forms and tax from other states. The courses can be taken at vocational schools, online schools or some tax preparer service centres. Once you finish and pass the course, you will be able to prepare tax returns and understand different strategies for tax savings.

Sign up for a class on income tax at a local college, online or at a tax preparer learning centre.

Attend the classes, which should last about 12 weeks.

Apply to private companies that generate tax returns after you have completed and passed your course.

When doing taxes, refer to your books and classroom material if you are unsure of a particular situation.
