Hipsters (or "overly hip" individuals) are all over the world. They usually reside in larger cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco. Hipsters have certain signature looks that make them undeniably trendy and hip. There are a few ways to sport the hipster look in an authentic manner.

Instructions

  1. 1

Wear vintage attire. Hipsters love to shop at vintage boutiques, or at Salvation Army and Oxfam thrift stores. Vintage dresses, dress jackets, flannel, bell bottoms, button-down shirts and often boots and shoes are all key components to a hipster look.

  2. 2

Wear skinny trousers. To accentuate the "more stylish than thou" look, hipsters wear extremely tight trousers, often referred to as "skinny pants." These trousers can come in any colour, but tend to be black. Classic skinny trousers tend to fit very tightly around the ankle.

  3. 3

Wear ironic T-shirts. Hipsters love to showcase their irony. This usually comes in the form of '80s or '90s nostalgia, such as old cartoons, cancelled sitcoms, video games, or anything that could be interpreted as a pop cultural reference from these time periods.

  4. 4

Wear flamboyant belts, the bigger the better. The more colourful, the better. As long as the belt catches your eye, it's hip. Rhinestones, spikes or anything gaudy or excessive that brings attention to the belt is a good thing.

  5. 5

Wear Converse sneakers or Doc Martens. Converse sneakers have long been a hipster staple.

Tips and warnings

  • Study other hipsters and emulate their looks. Walk around such areas as Silverlake in Los Angeles or Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
