The Staffy, or American Stafford Terrier, is a strong, broad-chested breed that is known for its intelligence and loyalty. According to the Dog Breed Info Center, a Staffy requires daily exercise to prevent it from becoming restless, which will make it difficult to control. Using a harness will help the owner gain more control during walks. Taking the dog's measurements will ensure that the harness fits properly.

  1. 1

Sit the dog in front of you in a sitting position. Give the dog a toy or a bone to distract it during the measuring process.

  2. 2

Measure the area around the chest. Using a fabric tape measure, place it around the area just behind the dog's front legs. Write this measurement down on a piece of paper.

  3. 3

Measure the area across the chest. Place one end of the measuring tape at the top of either of the legs. Bring the measuring tape around the chest, until it reaches the top of the other leg. Write this measurement on the piece of paper.

  4. 4

Take the measurements to a local department or pet supply store. Peruse the harnesses and use your measurements to find the correct size. If possible, bring your dog along and try several harnesses on, while in the store. A correct fit will allow you to place two fingers between the harness and the dog's skin.
