    Installing Window Black-Out Shades

  1. 1

First, you must purchase the type of blackout shades you want to install There are several types of shades, including cell shades, bamboo shades and sheer shades. Each shade filters and blocks out light in varying degrees. You should decide what type will work best for the room in which you want to install them.

  2. 2

Next, decide which position you want your blinds to be in. There is the inside wall mount, which is directly inside the window and is the preferred method for blackout shades. There is also the outside mount, in which the blinds are mounted directly outside the frame of the window (although this method does not block out as much light). The final mount is the projection mount, which goes on top of the window frame. This is the least preferred method, because it makes it hard to completely block the light.

  3. 3

With the measuring tape, measure the amount of space that should be between the brackets. Mark the area with your pencil. Do this only after you have removed any existing hardware or drapery. The actual space will depend on the size of your window and the size of the blackout shades you have chosen. Mark with a small "X." Don't worry about the mark, because you will be placing the hardware right over it. Typically, the brackets will be fastened about 1" from the sides or edge of the frame.

  4. 4

Next, find the hardware brackets that came with your blinds. You will want to place the screws through the top of the bracket and turn each screw a few times with the screwdriver. Use the drill and the appropriate drillbit to completely secure the bracket with the screws.

Tips and warnings

  • The key to successful blackout shade installation is to make certain the brackets are spaced properly. Follow the directions that came with your shades. Measure twice.
  • For the most finished and professional look, choose shades with an inside mount.
  • There are many options for pre-made shades. Check these out first before you order custom shades, which can be costly
  • If you want the room to be completely blacked out, an inside mount is your best option. You should also choose shades that offer complete darkness or privacy.
  • Keep all cords out of the reach of children and pets, to prevent choking or strangulation. If you are very concerned about this risk, opt for shades without cords. The shades can be pushed up or pulled down manually.
