Origami, which is a word that is composed of two Japanese words, oru (to fold) and kami (paper), has been a part of history for centuries. Despite its Japanese name, origami originated in China. It was not until after China brought paper to the Japanese that it became a Japanese art. Originally, paper folding was mostly used for ceremonies because paper was considered a luxury item but soon became a fun activity enjoyed by many.

Instructions

    Waterbomb Base Folding Instructions

  1. 1

Place the origami paper with the coloured side up.

  2. 2

Create a valley fold down the middle of the origami paper, from right to left or left to right. This should divide the paper into two equal sides. Crease it well and unfold the paper.

  3. 3

Create a valley fold from bottom to top. This should divide the paper into four equal sections. Crease it well and unfold the paper.

  4. 4

Flip the paper over so that the colour is now facing down.

  5. 5

Create a valley fold in a diagonal line. It should go down the middle of the paper and through the middle of two of the four equal sections -- one on the top left side, the other on the bottom right side of the paper. Crease the fold well and unfold.

  6. 6

Create a valley fold in a diagonal line. It should go down the middle of the paper and through the middle of two of the four equal sections -- one on the top left side, the other on the bottom right side of the paper. Crease the fold well and unfold.

  7. 7

Create a second diagonal valley fold. This one should also go down the middle of the paper and through two of the four sections -- one on the top right side, the other on the bottom left side. The two diagonal lines should create an "x." Crease the fold well and unfold.

  8. 8

Place the paper so that the diagonal squares still look like an "x." Place your fingers on the crease to the left and the right of the paper. Push the two sides of the paper towards each other.

  9. 9

Hold down the background triangle that will form as you push the paper together. Continue pushing the two sides together until they meet.

  10. 10

Push the paper down. This should form a triangle.

    Creating the Inflatable Goldfish

  1. 1

Place the triangle so that the longest side is facing towards you. Fold the right front flap of the triangle up towards the peak until it meets the peak and your centre crease. Repeat with the left front flap.

  2. 2

Fold the right tip of the folded right front flap so that it meets the centre crease. Fold the front flaps of the tip of the triangle down so that they meet the two folded tips.

  3. 3

Flip the paper over. The tip of the triangle should still be facing up. Fold each side of the triangle, starting at the tip, so that they lay against the centre crease of a triangle, much like you would fold a paper aeroplane. Fold the bottom of the left flap over just enough to create a triangle. Fold the left flap so that it is lying on top of the right flap.

  4. 4

Blow into the goldfish inside the open part of the crease located at the bottom of the triangle on the left flap that you just folded.
