Things You'll Need:

  • Vegetables
  • Dried mushrooms and beans
  • Whole grains
  • Macrobiotic cookbook
  1. Step 1

Fermented soy, or miso soup is easy to prepare. It's mostly a simple stock with miso added when the stock is hot. Miso is an important part of the macrobiotic diet because the fermented soy is said to be a good source of protein and amino acids.

  2. Step 2

Crushed nori seaweed (sea vegetable) can be added to almost any basic soup recipe in place of sodium. In keeping with the macrobiotic philosophy, vegetables should be in season and not overcooked. Try a cabbage soup with shiitake mushrooms and nori.

  3. Step 3

Since the macrobiotic diet stresses that vegetables should be in season, shop for produce that is recently harvested. In the fall, enjoy a ginger squash soup. In the winter, enjoy a potato soup, Wilted greens in the spring and just about everything else in the summer.

Tips & Warnings
  • When cooking with sea vegetables, you might not have to use salt to season your food. Be sure to taste it before seasoning.
  • Do not overcook your vegetables. While some vegetables can withstand prolonged cooking, many can not and overcooking can destroy nutrients, flavor and texture.
