How to Exercise if You Have M.E.

Those that suffer from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) can face a challenging life. ME is more commonly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and can leave it victims suffering from a wide variety of symptoms. Having ME can be quite frustrating. Some recover quickly while others have their lives completely disrupted. In this article, we will look at how exercise can help one cope with ME. We will also look at how one should approach exercise as well as suggestions on the types of activities that might be suitable. We will finally look at the advantages that an exercise program can offer to those suffering with ME.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand that exercise for the ME sufferer has to have an entirely different approach. Exercise needs to be looked at as a way of improving symptoms not toning the body. If one who suffers from ME pushes too hard their condition can worsen. Pain, memory loss and fatigue can take over and set them back for an extended period of time.

  2. Step 2

Learn to avoid the traps extra activities can lead to. One of the most common is overdoing it. An ME sufferer has varying degrees of wellness throughout their condition. In other words, some days they feel much better than others. When they are feeling better they are much more vulnerable to the traps. On their good days, quite often they will overdo their exercise. This can force their energy levels down and actually make them feel worse. It is important not to increase activity levels unless recommended by a doctor. They will likely allow an increase if there is consistent progress in the condition.

  3. Step 3

Avoid high impact exercise, at least in the beginning of the program. It is important that those afflicted with the condition choose something suitable. Activities such as stretching, yoga and walking are excellent options. These not only help maintain health they can also help alleviate the symptoms. Yoga and stretching can help reduce the muscle aches and pains associated with ME. Walking is good for maintaining muscle tissue and raising self-esteem.

  4. Step 4

A carefully managed exercise program can help those that suffer from ME. It can raise their self-esteem, reduce weight and alleviate pain. The ME sufferer can maintain an exercise program with the right approach and advice from a professional. As long as they avoid the pitfalls, exercise is an option.
