How to Remove Old-Age Stage Makeup

You just finished your performance as Miss Haversham in “Great Expectations.” It took you the better part of an hour to apply the old-age makeup, but it doesn’t have to take that long to remove it.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dental Floss
  • Spirit gum remover
  • Cotton swabs
  • Makeup remover
  • Facial tissues
  • Face cleanser
  • Astringent
  • Cotton balls
  • Eye cream
  • Moisturizer
  1. Step 1

Remove nose putty with a length of dental floss. Wrap the ends around your fingers and insert at the top of the nose. Gently slide it down your nose until the putty is removed.

  2. Step 2

Remove prosthetics using spirit gum remover. Insert a cotton swab into the spirit gum remover. Rub the cotton swab under the edge of the prosthetic until it pulls away from the face.

  3. Step 3

Use a fresh cotton swab inserted in spirit gum remover. Insert it under the edge of the prosthetic and gently rub back and forth until the spirit gum loosens and the prosthetic is removed. If the prosthetic is to be reused, clean with a fresh cotton swab and spirit gum remover until all the spirit gum is removed. Allow to air dry before storing.

  4. Step 4

Use a fresh cotton swab inserted in spirit gum remover to remove any spirit gum or latex left on your face. Apply makeup remover liberally to your face and remove with a facial tissue. You can use a cold cream, an oil based remover, or professional makeup remover, such as the ones sold by Ben Nye or Kryolan.

  5. Step 5

Wash your face using facial cleanser. Saturate a cotton ball with astringent and rub it over your face. If there is makeup left on the cotton ball, wash your face and use the astringent again. Apply eye cream and moisturizer to your face.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use a fresh cotton swab in the spirit gum remover to prevent contamination from spirit gum residue or oils from your skin.
  • At the end of the weekend’s performances, treat your skin to a facial mask.
  • Be careful when removing eye makeup.
