Step 1
Look for a mat that will accommodate your height. Pilates exercises include a lot of stretching for flexibility and you will want to have all parts of your body on the mat for the most comfort and support.
-
Step 2
Consider if you will be carrying your mat to classes with you. If you do the exercises at a studio or other location, look for a mat that folds or rolls easily. Many mats come with handles attached so that you do not need a bag to carry them. If you will be setting up a workout room in your home, pick thicker mats that are much heavier and do not travel as easily.

Step 3
Buy a mat that can serve you for other activities in addition to your pilates exercises. Many exercise equipment companies sell yoga mats, which are made with non-slip backings. While you may not need this kind of equipment for pilates, you can still use a yoga mat for multiple purposes. Mats made for floor work can be used for pilates as well, and they may save you some money.

Step 4
Find a mat that is easy to clean with soap and water. Pilates is a strenuous exercise routine and your mat will become sweaty and soiled. While exotic materials may be fun and eco-friendly, plastics and polyurethane-based products are easier to keep clean.
