How to Pull an Offensive Line Guard in Football

There is a reason that quarterbacks will spend lavishly on gifts for their offensive line. It's because they realize they are the difference between touchdowns and sacks. A good offensive line gives the quarterback time to run the offense properly. Here are some tips on how to "pull" an offensive line if you are a guard in football.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assume your position on the line of scrimmage. Line up on one side of your center and wait for the ball to snap.

  2. Step 2

Turn your back toward the center by rotating your torso. As soon as the ball snaps, you want your back to go toward the center. The other guard will do the same, making a hopefully impenetrable threesome. If you turn into the center, the defensive player will go around you.

  3. Step 3

Plant your foot downfield. Remember that balance and strength are key here. In order to complete the pull, you must plant your feet securely. Think of two massive fire hydrants.

  4. Step 4

Jam your hands up against your opponent on their chest. If you reach for the shoulders, they will be able to bat your hands away. Think "sternum" and go for the strike. This completes the pull if you are an offensive line guard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice with your entire offensive line so that your team can get the mechanics and footwork down in conjunction with one another.
  • Your pulling guard can also even take a drop step back into the pocket to establish position. The important thing is simply that no one gets past the offensive line guard.
