Directions for Making a Loin Cloth

Updated July 20, 2017

Loincloths are rectangular shaped pieces of cloth that cover the genital region. They have flaps in the front, and sometimes the back, held together with a belt. Loincloths can be made from a variety of material such as leather or fabric. Native Americans sometimes wore the loincloth with leggings to cover and protect the legs; today you may need one for a play, costume party or just for fun around the house.

Measure the waist of the person who will be wearing the loincloth. Cut a strip of leather or cloth to tie around the waist. Cut a couple of inches longer than the waist so that it can be tied.

Cut the material of choice into a rectangle shape as wide as half the circumference of the waist. If making a front and back, two of these pieces are needed.

Lay the strip of leather or cloth over the cut pieces of material, and fold the material over. Stitch the strip to the rectangular piece (s).

Place around the waist and tie the leather strip in place. Tie it so that it is comfortable but does not expose the genital region.
